Meet the woman worth more than BeyoncéBy Olivia Ruello | Oct 12, 16 10:13 AM
Introducing Sophia Amoruso
We need to pop the champagne – two of our Premium members, Catriona Wallace and Cathie Reid, are behind Flamingo, an artificial intelligence company that sold to Cre8tek last month – and this month will become the second ever in Australia to list on the ASX with a female chair and female chief executive. Flamingo will have a market cap of $24 million.
This is a huge stride in moving the needle for female business owners in this country – but is two out of 500 really good enough? Absolutely not.
We know women are starting and building great businesses in this country, because they’re the women in our community; they’re you!
But Google-Image the word ‘CEO’ or ‘boss’ and a bunch of white, middle-aged men will stare back at you. Society as a whole still stereotypes what it means to be a boss – many think Mr Burns or Mark Zuckerberg in a hoodie.
One woman who's trying to change that globally and is paving the way for thousands of girls through her movement and foundation, #GIRLBOSS, is Sophia Amoruso. Yes, in a perfect world we wouldn’t need the label ‘girl’ attached to the word ‘boss’, but Sophia is using it to empower the next generation of female entrepreneurs.
At age 22, Sophia had dropped out of school, was broke, directionless, and had taken a job just for the health insurance. Now 32, she’s on Forbes’ Richest Self- Made Women list (and ranks higher than Beyoncé!).
I’m excited to share that Sophia is coming to Australia for the very first time in November and it’s exclusively for Business Chicks.
She’s the ultimate entrepreneur – completely self-made – and as the founder and executive chairman of Nasty Gal, America’s fastest-growing online retailer, Sophia is an e-commerce phenomenon.
We want to put people on our stage who are shaking things, doing things differently and working towards making the future better for women globally – Sophia is the epitome of this. We’re presenting her in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and we’d love you to join us for brekky with the ultimate #Girlboss.
It’s working with people like Sophia that’s going to move that number from two to 202.
Don't miss Sophia speaking in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne next month. Grab your ticket now.
